105000 Service at dealer HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH ???

Just rang the local dealer to enquire about booking my ROK in for 105000 service and asked about cost after Service member said 'Oh... thats a major one'

Timing Belt approx $500 in parts
    4 hrs labour
Water pump is also checked and if there is signs of weepage it is replaced.
    Worst case $1850

The only thing that has weepage at the moment is me and my wallet.
I have declined the service at this stage until I recover from the shock.

Am I being bent over by the stealer service department or is this about right ?

Sounds about right for dealer pricing. From memory the dealer stung me about 1680 for the timing, water and service a couple of years ago.

Where abouts are you located as i am sure someone's got a local mechanic they recommend

You’ll always pay top dollar going to a dealer for a service that’s below par depending on the dealer. Who’s the dealer?

I had my timing belt and water pump replaced in May 2017. I called 3 dealers in Melbourne and all quoted me around the $1900 mark. My Amarok is a 2012 and out of warranty.

So I purchased a timing belt (including water pump) off ebay for $375. I had my local mechanic do the work. He charged me $600 for his time...and apologized because he said it took a bit longer because he took his time making sure the job was done right. It still cost me $975. But I supported a a good local mechanic who deserved my business. I see him everyday down the street in a small town. I spoke to him at length about the quality and reliability of the Dayco brand belt. He left me feeling confident that the Dayco belt would be as good as the VW one and that he would do the job better than VW would. He drove me to work in my Amarok, took the car with him to do the work, and then dropped it back at the end of the day.

It might be a different story for you if you are still under warranty, but my local mechanic is able to service our work cars with out voiding their warranty. I would recommend finding a good mechanic that you can trust and invest your $ in them.

Had the timing belt changed 12 months ago for $1,000 by local mechanic (also RACWA contractor). Service done at same time for $300 to $350, can't remember exactly.
